DTF vs DTG printing

Pressing a transfer onto a t-shirt with a heat press

Both print full-color designs with no screens. DTG sprays ink directly into the shirt; DTF prints onto a film that’s heat-pressed onto the shirt. DTG feels softer on cotton; DTF works on almost any fabric.

Quick comparison

DTF DTG
Fabrics Cotton, polyester, blends, nylon Best on 100% cotton
Feel Thin film on top Soft, in the fabric
Color on darks Very bright Good (needs white underbase)
Small text & details Crisp Crisp
Cost per print Lower Slightly higher

Which should you choose?

  • Cotton tees with a soft feel → DTG.
  • Polyester, blends or performance shirts → DTF.
  • Bright designs on black shirts → DTF often pops more.
Does DTF crack?

Quality DTF transfers stretch well and resist cracking; cheap transfers or poor pressing can peel. Wash inside out on cold.
