How to start a t-shirt business

A designer in his studio

The easiest way to start is print-on-demand: no inventory, no upfront cost. Once a design proves itself, switch your best-sellers to bulk screen printing for much better margins.

1. Pick a niche

Sell to a specific group: a hobby, profession, city or fandom (without using trademarks you don’t own).

2. Create designs

Simple text and bold graphics sell best on shirts. Test several.

3. Choose a print model

  • Print-on-demand: Printful, Printify, Gelato.
  • Bulk: order 24-100 of a proven design from a screen printer and ship yourself.

4. Price for profit

Use the POD profit calculator. Many sellers price tees at $25-$32.

5. Sell

Start with Etsy or a Shopify store, and promote where your niche already gathers.

6. Order samples

Wear and wash your own products before you advertise them.

Is a t-shirt business profitable?

It can be, but margins on print-on-demand are thin. Profit comes from a focused niche, repeat customers and moving best-sellers to bulk printing.
