Which should you start with?

  • Hobby or a few shirts for family/teams: a heat press and vinyl cutter (e.g. a craft cutter). Cheapest, easiest, durable results.
  • Full-color photos on polyester shirts: sublimation: vivid and permanent, but only on light-colored polyester.
  • Selling full-color designs on cotton, any shirt color: DTF has become the go-to small-business method: print transfers, then press them.
  • High-volume detailed cotton prints: DTG, if you have steady orders to justify the cost and maintenance.
  • Big orders of simple designs: screen printing has the lowest cost per shirt.

Don’t want equipment at all?

Use print on demand: the printer makes and ships each shirt only when it sells. Run the numbers with our POD profit calculator, or order printed shirts from a custom t-shirt printer.

Buying tips

  1. Budget for the heat press: DTF, sublimation and vinyl all need one. A 15×15 in clamshell or swing-away press handles most shirts.
  2. Factor in maintenance: inkjet-based printers (DTG, DTF) need regular use and cleaning to avoid clogged heads.
  3. Buy blanks that match the method: see the best blank t-shirts for printing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best t-shirt printing machine for beginners?

A heat press with a vinyl cutter is cheapest and easiest. For full-color on any shirt, a DTF setup is the most popular next step.

Can I use a regular printer to print t-shirts?

Only with inkjet heat-transfer paper, which gives a less durable result. Sublimation and DTF use special inks.

Can you sublimate on cotton?

Not directly: sublimation bonds to polyester. Use DTF or vinyl for cotton.
